This is an excellent article and I was really glad to see it up here. I breastfed both of my children but always for a short time because I had problems with milk production both times. I do remember the fears and the unease about breastfeeding in public. Add to the fact that I was shy and my mother had no qualms about "talking" for my kids and declaring in a less-than-hushed tone to just "flop it out and feed me." Horrible! There were truly days when I wanted to douse my mother in a glass of water (or whatever was handy) for saying something like that in public.

Breastfeeding is not only natural but very healthy for your baby. Don't let anyone intimidate you not to.

With my first daughter I tried very hard not to breastfeed in public. I would hide in my car or in a restroom. Feeding her in a restroom was awful for me. It felt unhygenic and degrading to me. Now that I have an infant and a toddler, I just feed her when I have to. If I'm on the playground, I'll sit on a bench, cover up, and do it. It's too hard to try and wrangle my toddler to a private place and keep her there. I'm as discrete as I can be, but I'm not going to worry about it.

I would sit in my car at my other sons ball games and people would STILL look at me strange. It wasn't like I was letting anything hang out. It was all nicely covered.

I think there are some people who look for reasons to complain. Breast feeding is not intrusive. I was feeding my son in a resteraunt once. The waiter took our order and brought us drinks (while I was feeding). By the time he brought out the food, the baby was being held by his grandmother. The waiter hadn't even noticed that there was a baby with us . I'm sure there was someone, all the way on the other side of the room though, who had to complain about it.

You just do what you got to do and don't worry about it and things will be okay.

I've been stared at while breastfeeding in my vehicle. It's not like I'm sitting there topless waving my breasts about, you know???

People would probably stare less if you WERE sitting there topless waving your breasts. Interesting how that is, huh. The more you try to please others or atleast not offend anyone, the more you seem to offend someone. I had one guy walk by with his son. The son stopped to look what I was doing. Dad grabbed his head and turned it around and pulled him on past our car. I was sitting with my son propped on a bobby and his head and most of his body completely covered. Basically, I was sitting under a blanket. Sad, I think.

In our homeschooling group, the moms just whip it out and start feeding. We all keep ourselves covered, but the kids come and go and ask for things and some (without siblings that young) will even watch for a bit. None of the mom's make a big deal about it, so none of the kids make a big deal about it.

Thumbs up Re: Breastfeeding in public.

i am in the WIC (women infants and children) program and i thought that breastfeeding was so embarrasing and i had decided on not doing it.Then i watched a video about it at WIC and i couldn't believe all the health benefits to the baby and to the mothers. i had no idea it helped your cervix get back to a normal size faster than a bottle-feeding mother i just thought when it was ready to be normal sized again it would go....and all the benifits to the babies! i had changed my mind after hearing all this. so in about 2 more months i am going to breastfeed and i don't care where i am as long as it benefits to my baby i am happy.. and not to mention benefits to me!
