How long did you wait to start cereal...

How long did you wait to start cereal for your breastfed baby? My daughter just turned four months old and people are already starting to nudge me about getting her started, but I'm just not in a hurry. She seems satisfied and she can't even sit up yet. I'm thinking I'll wait until she can sit up at least...I want her to get the maximum benefits from nursing as well, before I start.

I nursed my dd for 14 months. People around me (including my doctor) started nudging me to give her solids at four months, also. I'm glad I didn't give in--nursing is cheaper and creates a strong bond between mother and infant. Go with your gut on this one.

Thanks for the encouragement. You know, I don't understand people's attitudes about breastfeeding sometimes. It seems like everyone says you should breastfeed, but then when you are the world works against you! LOL.

I had to stop breastfeeding Alex earlier than I would have liked due to health issues, but as far as the cereal goes, I did start him at four months, but he was eating 8 oz every three hours and wasn't satisfied. If your little one is fine, I don't see any reason they would need to start cereal until six months unless they need the extra iron for some reason.

I breastfed my twins and did not start cereal until they were about 8 months old. It was easy because they were ready and enjoyed it. There's absolutely no reason to start at 4 mos. Why rush it. They're only babies for a short, short time.
