Default Trying to get pregnant? Don't smoke!

I'm sure you have heard that a million times if you are a smoker. But I believe it is very sound advice. I always thought that if I found out that I was pregnant that I would just quit then. Then one of my friends, who was having trouble conceiving, was told by her dr. to quit. As soon as she did, she got pregnant.

Right after I got married the second time, I quit smoking and got pregnant within four months. My ex and I had tried for two years and nothing ever happened, so I really believe that smoking was hampering my efforts.

It has somthing to do with the tar and other nasty stuff in the smoke will thicken the lining of your cervix, preventing sperm from getting through in some women.

So if you smoke and are ttc, quit! Not only is it healthier for you, it may help you get that baby!

Quitting smoking is tough and, since you will definately want to NOT be smoking while pregnant, I think it is better to quit smoking before hand. Not only will you be healthier, but you will not have to combine the stress of quitting with being pregnant and possibly morning sickness.

Definitely. No two ways about it smoking has got to be bad. Doesn't it also reduce oxygen levels in the blood too?

There are so many bad things about smoking, I think it would be impossible to list them all here. I just have to say I'm glad I never started as I definitely know it is very hard for people to quit.

I agree with ferby as smoking is terrrible for pregnancy. I got my advice while reading information on [Please register to see this link Register] and did not even get tempted to smoke at all. However, if you find it difficult to give up this habit during pregnancy then try and find some herbal cigarettes which might actually be good for the baby. Do read the instructions for sure.

Smoking is not good for your [Please register to see this link Register], but it's even worse for the baby after it's conceived.

Smoking nearly doubles a woman’s risk of having a low-birthweight baby. In 2002, 12.2 percent of babies born to smokers in the United States were of low birthweight (less than 5½ pounds), compared to 7.5 percent of babies of nonsmokers.2 Low birthweight can result from poor growth before birth, preterm delivery or a combination of both. Smoking has long been known to slow fetal growth. Studies also suggest that smoking increases the risk of preterm delivery 37 weeks of gestation). Premature and low-birthweight babies face an increased risk of serious health problems during the newborn period, chronic lifelong disabilities (such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation and learning problems) and even death.

The more a pregnant woman smokes, the greater the risk to her baby. However, if a woman stops smoking by the end of her first trimester of pregnancy, she is no more likely to have a low-birthweight baby than a woman who never smoked. Even if a woman has not been able to stop smoking in her first or second trimester, stopping during the third trimester can still improve her baby’s growth.

The use of tobacco is supposed to decrease sperm count. I've known quite a few couples where the husband smokes and they haven't had many issues of getting pregnant.
