Default Breastfeeding is always...appropriate

I have a story that I want to share. San Francisco, CA June 6, today I was walking on 2nd street and I saw a bunch of people gathering. I didn’t know what that was until I get close. It is some kind of strike or contest of female that are breastfeeding women with their babies on their hands, holding the sign, said "Breastfeeding is always appropriate". Interesting.

I think there is appropriate breast feeding (when you are not trying to make a spectical of yourself) and an inappropriate breastfeeding (doing it as an "in your face" gesture to others around you). I don't think most people have a problem with it when your are being descrete.

I do nurse in public, well-covered under a blanket. However, I always feel like people are staring at me and disapproving. I wish there was more acceptance towards women who need to nurse their babies while out.

I didn't breastfeed so I never had to feel uncomfortable in public, however I have alwasy done my best to treat mothers who were feeding with respect as long as they were being respectufl to their surroundings as mentioned above. It's fine to be discreet, but I don't like it being done in an in your face manner.

Breastfeeding is really appropriate but I would prefer to do it in a discrete place, not public, especially if there are many people passing by and looking at. It is just that it is not nice to show off your breasts, I think that is the point, and it is not the act of breastfeeding that is being disapproved by the people.

I can't stand people that feel they have to make a spectacle out of themselves just to prove a point. Especially such a pointless one at that. Breastfeeding is not illegal, so just why did those so-called mothers (could've been paid childless activists, for all we know) decide to do such an in-your-face demonstration?

Seeing a naked breast is just shocking for some folks, no matter where or why. My husband supports breast feeding BUT the other day there was a new mother over at our house and she was feeding her baby while sitting and visiting with us (the other moms - it was a homeschool day at our house). My husband had not been introduced yet to her, but walked in and saw the "feeding". Later he mentioned it kindof in passing to me "hey, I don't know you yet, but I've seen your breast". I don't think he was offended, just a little taken aback. It's one thing to see your wife's breast, but it's a whole different thing to see some strangers.

I think I'll have a little more pity for people from now on.

I think breastfeeding isfine, but I do agree that there should be a certain amount of consideration for those around you and your surroundings. To me, it's a matter of common courtesy.
