Comforting After Shots

Anyone have any helpful tips on calming your little one after their shots? Alex is obviously upset by them, and he screams for quite a bit, but the last go around he literally screamed for almost a half hour in the office while I tried to calm him, then the entire way home, and even up until I put him in his pjs and down for a nap. He fell asleep almost right away, and then was fine when he woke up. I know these things are painful, and necessary, but is there anything I can do to soothe him afterwards?

I always gave my son a dose of tylenol about 15 minutes BEFORE his shots and we never had any difficulty with him with crying, soreness, mild fever, etc that you sometimes get after shots. I did this on my own - I'm sure my doctor wouldn't have wanted me to premedicate him, but it sure made him more comfortable.

My girls have always just screamed as they were getting the shots and then immediately quieted. I'm grateful that it doesn't seem to phase them. Watching them get shots is heartbreaking enough!
