Default Sitting Up

When did your infant start sitting on their own? Alex is sitting up rather well right now in the "tripod" way, being that he props his hands in front of him to hold himself up. When I take him anywhere though he is not quite able to sit up in like a grocery store buggy or anything like that. I don't want to push him, but am wondering if there is anything I should be doing or just let him reach this milestone on his own?

I do "pull ups" with my daughter. I lay down, put my knees up, and sit her in a reclining position on them. Then I hold her hands and gently pull her into a sitting position. We do that a lot. She enjoys it. If she resists the movement I stop immediately. It helps strength her neck and I believe it helps her get the hang of sitting up.

I also did something like the pullups with my son. Also, in the grocery store seats, etc I woudl just roll his blanet up and place it in front of him. It didn't take him long to feel and work with the natural balance of his body and I think it helped him develop quicker on his own.

I believe my daughter could sit up on her own completely between 6 and 7 months. I did the pull ups thing but never dared with the grocery cart.

The grocery cart thing is a sore issue for me. My local grocery store had the buggies with the attached infant seat on them, then went out and got all new carts. They ditched the infant seats, so Alex has to sit strapped in and he rolls around ALOT. I always keep my hands on him of course, and I usually end up giving up and just carrying him, but it's a big pain while trying to choose and pay for groceries. My MIL just got us a seat thingy that goes in the grocery cart though that's padded and has neat designs on it. Hopefully that will make things a bit more comfortable for him.

I believe my guys were sitting up somewhere between 5 and 7 months on their own. My youngest LOVED to sit up even when he wasn't very good at it. His body would tilt further and further forward until he was folded up - he wouldn't put his hands out to prop himself up, so I rolled up a towel and put it across his lap. And always a big pillow behind for the sudden jerks upright and over.

Well, we tried the grocery cart cover thing yesterday, and it worked out well. It has a strap, so Alex is relatively secured, and it has a pillow I can put across his lap so he can relax against it without risking hitting his mouth or anything. He is really coming along quickly with the sitting up!
