Default Pacifier Usage

Is your infant using a pacifier? I never did with my daughter (now 2), and things worked out well. She did suck her thumb, but has recently kicked the habit.

My son is six months old and he does use one, though right now he primarily uses it to chew on since he's cutting teeth. He'll go days without wanting it, and then sometimes he just gets fussy and needs something soothing.

I wish my kids would have taken one. Studies have recently come out suggesting that pacifier usage can help prevent SIDS. Outside of that, my baby nurses frequently because she uses ME as her pacifier!

My son used a pacifier and it worked out just fine. It was a source of comfort and familiarity to him and he weaned himself off of it when the time was right. I always preferred him using a pacifier to sucking his thumb because the pacifier could be taken away or "forgotten", but his thumb would have always been there. We were fortuneate to not have any issues with it.

My daughter used one until about 10 months and that worked well for us. It was a lot easier to get her off of then I thought. We're thinking about not using one at all if we have a second baby though.

My first two sons took a pacifer - no problem. The third son was not interested. We tried every size, shape, and form. Nothing! But boy would he suck his thumb. He even made the poor think raw and just kept right on sucking.

Now, at 7 mths, he will occasionally suck his thumb when he gets tires, but that's it. He'll take the pacifer - to chew .

There's nothing wrong with taking a pacifer or a thumb for that matter. The problem comes when they continue doing it as they grow older.

My sons never took a pacifier. They just don't seem to like it.
