Default WIC Usage?

Our firend ( a teenager) is hesitant to use WIC, even though she is elegable for it. She can't get past the "stigma" of using them she says. Any suggestions? We've talked ourselves blue in the face to no avail.

When I had my first child, I was eligible for WIC but also didn't use it. It was not because of any stigma, it was because I had no way of getting to the required every other month meeting that was instituted in my area. Personally, I think that if the young mother feels bad about taking assistance and is providing enough for her child, good for her.

Melos - to a degree, I agree. However this young woman would benefit greatly from the WIC usage. I know it's a double edged sword. I thnk she shoudl take advantage of every avenue available to her - the money she can save (if there is any) could be used for other necessities. I dont' want to see her beocme a second, or third generation WIC an welfare user, however there nothing wrong with taking advantage of the help to be made available to her.

I've known lots of people who haved used it. It's a wonderful program. What's the stigma? Who's going to be pointing fingers at her? If she's worried what the grocery cashier thinks, she shouldn't. Tons of young mother's use WIC every day.

I know that we were eligible for WIC but chose not to participate. If the government finds out you are eligible, they stay all over you to give you assistance. I understand her reluctance, and ultimately it has to be her choice.

Shoot, we aren't eligible, but if we were, I'd be first in line! Baby formula, food, juice, all of that is expensive. Diapers, you name it, it's all an absolute must and no matter what your family makes, it adds up. Amy, have you tried explaining to her that IF she has WIC she can afford better quality things her baby might need? Top of the line formula instead of store brand (if she uses it), quality juices instead of those filled with additives and extra sweeteners? Just a thought, hope everything works out.

Well, I wasn't implying that someone who needs assistance should not get it. That is what programs like WIC are there for!
However, if you have talked to this woman about it and she has said No, I think you just have to accept her decision and stop talking till you are blue in the face.

I've actually done a little of both. I have gotten her the information that she needs, we've had our previous discussions and I am hoping she will come around. I agree it is totally her decision and I respect that.

kelkat, I just have to say I disagree with you here. I don't believe the government won't leave you alone if you use the program. It is there for your help, if you need it and in the experiences I know of, people have never been sorry for using the program.
