Default Cereal to Solids?

I would like to know when anyone has moved their infant from cereal to starter solids baby food. My pediatrician just said he can be started on cereal, juice and fruits and to give plenty of time before introducing a new one just to make sure he doesn't have any allergies. I've read that you should wait until he's taking cereal easily off a spoon. He is doing that, he definately understands the chew a little and swallow idea (as much as you would chew diluted cereal), so I'm thinking he could start trying fruits now? Or am I jumping the gun?

I started my eldest daughter when she was 4 1/2 months. Just watery cereal. From there I went to veggies. I decided to start with veggies and then move to fruit because I read somewhere that it prevents the baby from developing a sweet tooth. Just make sure to feed you baby the same food several days in a row to watch for allergies.

As far as I can remember, I already gave ground cooked rice with soup after a few months of cereals which was when the baby was already six months old. It was considered solid food and if it tastes well, there should be no reason for the baby not to like it.

I agree with starting veggies before fruits. First child of mine was fruits first - had a hard time with veggies. Second was veggies first - happily ate anything Of course, it could be personal preference.

Really? My pediatrician said to start him on fruits first but to wait on veggies until he was six months (he's 4.5 months now). I didn't think to ask why, but I'd certainly rather he end up accepting veggies easily for later on. Will have to call and ask him I guess.

Talking Re: Cereal to Solids?

I don't know if this veggies first or fruits first is kinda like doctors saying at one point it's better if a baby sleeps on his back and then doctors saying that it's best if a baby sleeps on his stomach. I know my little sister and I were both raised on veggies first and then fruits. I love both, my sister doesn't like veggies so much. On my mom's side of the family it was always veggies first. My grandma said it was because babies start out eating bland foods and veggies compared to fruit are less flavorful.

I've gotta funny story to tell. As a baby my lil sis liked veggies a lot (remember now she doesn't). She loved carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, any orange colored veggie. She wouldn't eat anything else. This went on for a while and she turned orange My mom took her to the doctor and the doctor said it was because she had too much beta carotene.

LOL Tai, I bet your mom freaked out! I know I would if my son turned orange! Of course, he was jaundice when we first brought him home from the hospital, and it's amazing to see his first day pictures. He looks so yellow in all of them, but I never noticed it at the time!

My pediatrician said to start on veggies before fruits. He gave us a whole list of the order to feed solids. We started at four months and tried each for about a week before moving on. We went from rice cereal to oatmeal, then barley and mixed. After that it was yellow veggies, then orange, then green and finally on to the fruits and then juice.

I'd go with a vegetable and then a fruit, etc. (Since you are waiting a bit between them anyway). Also, if your Dr. said to go ahead and start, then I would do so. Remember - we enjoy variety and a baby will too.
My funny story is that I always had to pack TWO jars of babanas when mysister watched my son, one for her and one for him, or he didn't end up getting any! She just never got over loving the banana baby fruit...

Amy, it's crazy that you say that, my son's absolute favorite is bananas. It's the one thing I can always count on him eating well. He just had his first veggie this week (peas) and did really well. Though he did make a hilarious face when he first tasted them.
