Biggest Scare Since Your Baby Was Born?
Has anyone had a big scare since their baby was born? Mine happened when Alex was one month old. He started projectile vomiting and had to spend 10 days in the hospital before they could diagnose the problem. He went from 7.5 pounds to 6.3 in those ten days because he couldn't keep anything down. They x-rayed, pulled blood, tested everything, and finally discovered he had pyloric stenosis. He had to have surgery to open the valve that leads from his stomach to his intestine. It wasn't letting any food through. My husband and I have never been so scared in our entire lives. As soon as the surgery was done he started keeping food down and started gaining weight back. Since then he's been just fine and is now fat and happy. Has anyone ever had a scare like this or am I the only unlucky one?

Oh no! That must have been horrible for you. I've never had a scare of that magnitude. My biggest scare was when my eldest was 1 and we were attacked by a cat which scratched and bit both of us. My son almost lost his eye.

Re: Biggest Scare Since Your Baby Was Born?
My son is a little older now, we have had our share of scares, most cam early on. Abe was very prone to ear infections (4 sets of tubes by age 5) and he would spike a fever of 103 or 104 within a half hour. Very rapid onset and of course he would get this horrible grayish tint to his skin. Develop a good relationship with your ped - which it sounds like you've done and try to stay calm. Both the doctor and you child will appreciate you dealing with things wiht a level head.

Re: Biggest Scare Since Your Baby Was Born?
When my son was about 8 months old my younger sister was watching him and put him on top of a card table and walked away. He fell off. I was terrified. He was okay. We called the dr. and they told us things to watch for, but he was normal and we never did take him to the hospital. It's amazing how resilient little ones are. He's 5 now and as normal as can be expected LOL.

Re: Biggest Scare Since Your Baby Was Born?
My son was born at 29 weeks and spent 2 months in the NICU. There were plenty of scares during those stressful weeks but once he came home it was just constant vigilance to make sure nothing came into contact with him that might make him sick. I think I finally was able to sleep an entire night through after he turned a year old. Now he's almost 10 and those days seem so long ago. But they stay with you. The thing is to always remain calm, establish good relationships with doctors and don't be afraid to get pushy and ask questions. If you're not satisfied always seek a second opinion.

Re: Biggest Scare Since Your Baby Was Born?
Well now I feel pretty silly because none of my scares since my baby has been born are as bad as those. The first would be when she had jaundice and had to be hospitalized at 3 days old. Then I was holding her one day when she was about 2 1/2 months old and going to put her in her travel swing, tripped over her bouncer seat, she fell to the carpet (not very far, thank goodness) and I fell backwards onto the kitchen floor. She was screaming pretty well, but I think she was scared more than anything.

Re: Biggest Scare Since Your Baby Was Born?
My biggest scare with my first baby was when I realized that I can't force him to breastfeed. When he was born, he wasn't able to feed on my breasts because he just can't hold the nipples and since he was my first baby, I think he wasn't able to extract milk from my breasts. He was crying a lot, he found it hard to feed and he was already very hungry. So what the nurse did was to give him a bottle of milk. That was the start of my fear, I tried very hard to make him feed on my breasts but he was just so smart to lick my nipples first before he gives in and young as he is, he knows if they are my breasts or the bottle and he just won't breastfeed. I was sad and I gave up when my mother in law realized that the baby can't breastfeed because my nipples were very flat.
