Vitamin supplements prevent low-weight babies
Researchers in Tanzania have discovered that vitamin supplements can reduce the possibility of having a low-weight or undersized baby.
Over 8,000 HIV-negative women were given proven prenatal supplements such as iron and folic acids, half were given placebo. The women receiving the vitamin supplements saw a 1.6% decrease in low-birth weight babies.
Wafaie Fawzi of Harvard University's School of Public Health said "In light of these findings, we recommend that multivitamins be considered for all pregnant women in developing countries, regardless of their HIV status".
Low--birth weight babies are more susceptible to things like heart disease, learning disabilities and even stunted growth. The researchers say adding additional vitamins to your diet can reduce these risks.
