It is really important to talk to the baby/babies ahead of the coming baby. For my first son, it took him on his 5th year to speak up about his jealousy of his brother. I really felt so down at that time that I realized I have forgotten the needs of my eldest son.

My eldest son was too young to understand what was going on when I was pregnant with his brother. He learned the word 'brother' and pointed at my belly, but that might have confused him when I then brought home a baby and still called it 'brother.'
My step-daughter (who didn't live with us) was not concerned at all. She seemed to think I had created a really cool doll for her to look at and play with.
