Default Tip for parents with little kids!

I got this email from a friend of mine and thought I'd pass it on. I guess I hadn't really thought about this much before and now that my kids are older I'm so thankful that this didn't happen to them (especially with my wild daughter)!

Hi,

I'm writing to my friends and family with little ones, soon to have little ones, and grandparents. Yesterday my son was playing in his room yesterday as he always does, and I heard a crash, glass breaking and screaming. He had pulled his dresser (luckily on 4 drawers) down on top of his entire body and was pinned underneath. A knob was pinning his cheek down. He cried for a while and then calmed down quite quickly. He has a bruise on his cheek but that's about all. I decided to take him to the Dr. just to get him checked over. He ended up having two CAT scans (he wiggled to much during the first), which was terrifying for him. Thank the Lord that everything is alright, but it was a very scary day.

Thankfully the glass that I heard breaking was actually hard plastic (but still very sharp) and didn't touch him.

So my advice, after learning the hard way, is to mount all of your book shelves, and dressers to the wall. We actually have our book shelves mounted but didn't think this dresser would be a problem. I guess we were wrong. I also heard there was an article in the local paper yesterday about a little one who pulled a big TV down on himself. He is also going to be okay but has to were something on his head. (This is what my mother-in-law told me anyway). We just don't think these things will happen but they do.

I just felt I needed to warn everyone so it didn't have to happen to any of you. Take care!

I keep thinking back to when I was a child and how we were allowed to play all alone. When we were living in the country, my brother (then 7) and I (then 4) would go to the pond across the street with the other local kids and fish. When we moved into town, the neighbor hood kids rode bikes all over town (literally).

Now, it seems that kids are more fragile. They don't play anything anywhere without protective gear and adult supervision. I think it's a little sad.

Remember the days of backyard football and hide-n-go seek?

The kid was in his bedroom playing. You wouldn't let your child play in his room by himself NeverMarried? I can't imagine how tired I would be if I followed my kids all over the house when they were playing - and how little I would get done.

Great advise though... about mounting furniture to the walls. A while back, a little girl was killed when a tall dresser toppled over on her. My son loves to climb and we have since attached everything to the wall.

I'm with you Melos. I can't image following my little ones around all day. If I don't want them in a room that I think might be unsafe, I close the door when I'm not right there.
